For a few minutes of each day, I like to cast aside the trappings and concerns of the world, and thumb my nose at the virtues of political correctness. On that note, what better way to embrace this rousing rejection of everything the modern world throws upon us, than to devote a few short lines to the recent events in Oshkosh, WI?

Oskkosh Pigfest is an annual event, steeped in history, normally held on extremely sweltering hot days, and invariably rough ground. It embraces the elegant violence of rugby, as well as the eating of roasted animal (and for those of age, the consuming of beverages). Any one of these might be viewed poorly by society, and in combination.. nuf said.

There is also some good rugby to be had, of the modified 10's variety. A wise man once said "7 a side rugby has seven minute halves, 10 a side has 10 minute halves, yet 15 a side has 40 minute halves. Where's the math in that?" Whereas 7's has pretty much all backs (or those that aspire to be considered fast), 10's is a direct split of 5 backs and 5 forwards.

10's is normally played during the summer and is geared towards the larger bodies of the game that don't readily jump at playing 7's. Oshkosh has been holding one of the premier and and most anticipated events of the summer for years, and this year on Saturday, July 16th was no exception. In fact this was the 31st Annual Pigfest , designed to celebrate 33 years of rugby in Oshkosh.

As with most summer events, prying guys out of beds, flower gardens, third shift entertainment venues and for the more responsible, their children's sporting events, can be a bit of chore. In the spirit of the game, and to support rugby in general, Garret Myer and Joseph Kloiber led a band of brothers to the north.

Details were sketchy at press time, and remain so nearly a month after the event (I think we're going to have to start embedding reporters like CNN does). The pool play consisted of matches vs. Madison, U.W. Stout and the Black and Blue. It should be noted for casual followers of the game, that none of these teams should be considered 'slouches', even at a non-league summer tournament.

The U.W. Stout game was highlighted by a number of great set pieces and defensive displays. The Madison game ended on a thrilling, yet heartbreaking bounce that gave our in-state rivals the win in a last second try. This unlucky (for us) score, cost the team a shot at the semi-finals.

Joseph Kloiber, who lives in the area (and commutes to Milwaukee!!), put on a nice display for the hometown crowd with a try. The Harlequin backline made an appearance as well, with Mitch Houston, John LeCloux and Mike Reagles all making a definite and positive impact on the day.Marquette University also chipped in with some of their 'blue chips' with Charlie and Rooster providing some much needed boost for the day.

The day was finished out with a bit of a breather win against the always venerable Black and Blue. As the shadows grow long, the throat gets dry and the stomach rumbles. Oskkosh RFC sought to solve all those troubles by providing the signature roasted pig and cold drinks to cap the day. All in all, it was a good celebration of rugby.
